The Littlest Tornado Victims
While assessing the devastating effects to their property from the tornado that hit Suffolk April 29th, 2008, one Suffolk family’s concern immediately turned into a rescue effort when they realized over one hundred baby birds had been thrown from their nests. The tornado leveled a densely vegetated area filled with nesting birds and their babies. Sadly, fallen trees and debris restricted access to many of the babies, but almost 80 birds were collected. During their rescue efforts, other unfortunate wildlife casualties were discovered including adult deer and wild turkeys.
Upon their arrival at the VBSPCA all the babies were assessed and set up in heated incubators. VBSPCA Wildlife Program volunteers arrived at the shelter to assist in getting the babies fed and transported to Linda Ratcliffe, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator with the VBSPCA Wildlife Program, who would be providing the birds with ongoing care until they can be released.
The Virginia Beach SPCA receives almost two thousand orphaned and injured wildlife per year. If you would be interested in volunteering with the VBSPCA Wildlife Program, or would like to receive training to become a wildlife rehabilitator, please contact Teresa Lamarche at 427-0070 ext 41 or via email at outreach@vbspca.com. You can obtain more information about other volunteer opportunities by visiting our wildlife website at http://vbspcawildlife.com.

Did you know...
...The Virginia Beach SPCA is an open-access facility serving south Hampton Roads.
Our open-access policy means that we will accept pets from all regions.
We do not euthanize adoptable animals to make space for others.
We do not pre-screen animals for the purposes of selecting only those suitable for adoption.
We rely on foster services to care for animals that may be too young to place for adoption, or those that require ongoing medical care. We are strongly invested in reducing pet overpopulation and increasing public awareness.
It is our standing policy that every healthy and treatable pet be made available for adoption.
We make every effort to place adoptable animals, but do euthanize animals that
"have a behavioral or temperamental characteristic that poses a health or safety risk or otherwise makes the animal unsuitable for placement as a pet, ...are suffering from a disease, injury, or congenital or hereditary condition that adversely affects the animal's health ... and are not likely to become "healthy" or "treatable" even if provided the care typically provided to pets by reasonable and caring pet owners/guardians in the community".
...That we need to raise $4,235 each day in order to continue our vital programs and services?
...That we provided shelter and care for over 4,400 surrendered animals, and over 2,000 wild animals last year?
...That 65% of people bringing animals to the VBSPCA do not make a cash donation for the care of the animals they ask us to take? Contributions from people bringing animals to the Virginia Beach SPCA covered just 4% of our operating expenses last year.
...That the Virginia Beach SPCA is the only non-profit open access shelter in the region that accepts animals from as far away as the Eastern Shore and North Carolina?
...That almost 60% of our $1.3 million operating budget must be raised from contributions from folks like you?
You can make a difference.
